Behestan Mahnshan Castle

Behestan Castle or Kohen Dej is located in Mahenshan city in Zanjan province and next to the Ghazal Ozen river.

The history of this fortress dates back to the Madh period. This fortress has been registered in the list of national monuments of the country under number 1458 under the name of Behestan Castle. It is very necessary to pay attention to the construction of retaining walls next to the Qezal Ozen river to protect the fortress.

Specifications of the castle:

The general space of the castle has been divided into three categories, including rooms, corridors, and staircases, which sometimes had a pointed roof and had triangular or circular places on the walls to place tallow burners. This fort has a zigzag staircase on the western and eastern sides, which once started from the lowest part of the northern side, and now it is nothing but a ruin imposed on the main core of the fort, and due to the erosion of its lower floors, traffic on this route is dangerous and It is almost impossible. The stairs on the northwest side of the castle are one of the untouched and healthy areas of Behestan Fortress, and above these stairs, there is a room in the shape of the decorated altars of the Islamic era mosque belonging to the Islamic era.And many stairs with a width of one meter are also an adaptation of this architectural style. Due to the great destruction, you can only reach the top of the castle with its huge flat stone slabs. It is 3 meters high and made of stone and Saroj, which is supplied with water using half-meter mud pipes called Ganges.

History of the castle: Some attribute the history of this fortress to the time of the Medes. The Medes entered the Iranian plateau through the estuary and the banks of the Ghazal Ozen river and settled in villages such as Madabad, 15 km from Mahenshan city, and the existence of defensive forts such as Behestan Castle, 12 km away. The moon has displayed beautiful and artistic architecture. But according to the archaeological research so far, the background of this fortress has been proven to the Achaemenid period. This fort stood and was used in the post-Islam period and up to the fifth century
